Anxiety and depression can have a devastating effect on ones fitness and health. It is unrecognizable in most people because they cloak it with a mask giving the impression that everything is one hundred per cent okay with them. It is the classic case of the circus clown who spends all his time in public making people laugh, but when he is alone and the mask comes off; then his true personality is revealed. Depression is the most insidious of all sicknesses, it is the silent assailant creeping up on the victim; it begins to chip away gradually at the mind, until the victim is overpowered with a feeling of worthlessness, but worse still helplessness. It is this feeling of helplessness that sends the mind into turmoil as it tries to understand what exactly is happening. The more searching is done for the reason; the more deeper one goes into a depressive state. This is when anxiety enters the scene.
Anxiety comes into play now as the answers to the problem cannot be found. Close family members may see subtle changes in the victims personality. He or she may begin to avoid family meals. They may become more reclusive, less inclined to take part in activities such as sport, or hobbies, they may become less conversational, even a bit more abrupt when replying to a question, or being asked to take part in some family or friends activity which before appealed to them, but now they have no desire to become involved.
Health and Fitness
The damage anxiety and depression can cause mentally and physically may be circumstantially as well as financially devastating. It can become so overpowering that ones body feels no inclination to do anything. It can be a chore to get out of bed in the morning. It can be a huge effort just to get into the shower, or even to clean ones teeth. Staying in ones room lying in bed seems a much better option than to force oneself up to go out and face the world. If this happens then unfortunately the victims schooling, or job suffers. This is when the cycle of events eventually bring a stalemate between the body and the depression; resulting in the mental and physical state of ones body and mind, so their health and fitness suffer dramatically.
There is no knowing if a person suffers with anxiety and depression until you notice the changes spoken about above are happening. The changes can be gradual or rapid. They can take place over years or just a few weeks. Teenagers are especially prone to anxiety and depression so they need attention and observing all the time. Peer pressure and bullying are some of the main causes of teenage anxiety and depression. There is help out there, but it is a very difficult subject to discuss if someone is still in denial and insist that they need no help. Be watchful, be caring, be understanding, but above all be sympathetic.
